http://www.walkontheriver.com In this film “Walk on the River- A Black History of the Alamo City” we take the time to document both the history and the contributions African Americans have made to the fabric of San Antonio from emancipation to the present time. We chronicle the the path of freed Blacks establishing communities, churches and schools in the 1800’s to thriving Black owned businesses that flourished during the Jim Crow era.
We touch on religion, politics, education, social organizations and community all in an attempt to paint a vivid picture of life for Black San Antonians in the past to help create a knowledge base, a sense of pride and a blueprint for the next generations moving forward.
As the city grows and changes, as the “Eastside” (historically considered the Black side of town) becomes more gentrified, as historical locations and landmarks are being demolished or forgotten- we, along with other movements and organizations in the city- are doing our best to help preserve our own history and tell our own story.
As filmmakers curating a historical piece, integrity and accuracy are very important to us. We have conducted interviews with professors, historians, business owners, educators and citizens; we’ve employed the help of researchers, students and volunteers to help paint an accurate picture of the life, struggles and victories of Black men, women and children in San Antonio Texas.
“Walk on the River” will feature very influential people from our community like:
Dr. Rudyard Hillard
Vera Williams Young
