The Hennepin County Medical Examiner has ruled the death of Philando Castile a homicide. An investigation will now determine how Minnesota police officer Jeronimo Yanez, who was identified as the shooter, will be charged for the killing.

The case caused huge outrage after a video shot by Castile’s fiancée became public last Wednesday. Yanez and fellow officer Joseph Kauser approached Castile’s vehicle during a traffic stop over a broken taillight.

With Kauser approaching from the passenger side, Yanez spoke to Castile on the driver’s side and instructed him to reach for his license. When Castile followed the instruction, Yanez shot him several times.
Castile, who had notified the officers that he was a licensed firearm holder, had his seatbelt on while Yanez shot him. His fiancée and his 4-year-old daughter were in the car and witnessed the shooting. In the video, Yanez was heard yelling profanities and trying to justify his actions to the fiancée, while pointing his gun at her.
