A biology exam at Roswell (New Mexico) High School reportedly caused outrage after a screenshot of a racially offensive question began circulating.
The question on the test was, “Why are niggers black?”
KOB 4 reported, “When I first saw it, you know, I was just taken back, like. You know, this isn’t right, I’m not reading this right,” Justice Adler, a student said. “And then I kept reading it over and over again, and I just got so angry.”
The news station reached out to the school district and the state’s Public Education Department. They were told that officials were reviewing a student whom they believe “altered and tampered with an end-of-course exam.” The Education Department added that “no such question exists on the N.M. end-of-course exam” and that there was “no breach of the testing platform.”
“Minorities aren’t just words,” Justice said. “Like, we are, we are people. Like, we have feelings.”
Community members were shocked at the incident:
“It’s just really ignorant, you know,” Roswell resident Valarie Flores told the news station. “I hope his parents or her parents have a talk with him and just explain, you know, fun and games, you could be hurting a lot of people.”
“I have black grandchildren, OK, so it just doesn’t affect black people,” Teresa Roden-Delgado, another resident, said. “I am not black, but my grandchildren are and it affects everybody.”
The Roswell Independent School District and the Public Education Department say they are looking into the situation.
