The entertainer is passionate about helping students who are attending historically Black schools in the United States.
Common was born and raised in Chicago. Many don’t know, but he attended the Florida A&M University. Common’s daughter currently attends the Howard University.
When interviewed by the Huffington Post, he revealed that the reason why he decided to help HBCUs is because he was inspired to do so while pursuing his undergraduate studies.
While at the University, Common got to meet and study with inspiring black students who came from diverse backgrounds from various parts of the nation. These students were all inspired to be great ad they had professors and other people who dedicated their time and life to see them achieve their dreams.
According to Common, giving black institutions resources and the opportunity to thrive is one of the important ways of giving back to the society.
Education is definitely one of the opportunities that would change lives of many Black students in the United States.
Hats off to Common for this effort. Many in the Black community underestimate the importance of HBCUs in our development and future.
It would be great if more athletes, entertainers, celebrities, alumni and the general Black community pitched it to support these institutions that have supported us.
