Colossill Model Of The Week: Naomi Banks
Colossill: Hello how are you? Thanks for taking the time out of your day to allow us to interview you.
Naomi Banks: Hello, I am doing great!
Colossill: Tell the Colossill viewers out there where you’re from and where do you currently reside?
Naomi Banks: I reside in Montréal, Québec, Canada and this is where I was born and raised.
Colossill: When and why did you get started? Was it for the glamour? The money? Pure kicks?
Naomi Banks: Everything started in July 2014 when I participated to Miss Teenage Canada at the age of 15 years old. I neither had experience in modeling nor in pageant before this wonderful event in Toronto. I learned how to walk in high heels two weeks prior the competition. On the finale, I was crowed the most photogenic of all contestants and I placed myself one of the top runway walk, which got me a place to participate to Top Model Search Canada. I met multiple agents from all over the world: Asia, Europe, the USA… I started modeling when one of the photographers, make up artist and designer asked me to do shooting for them and I found satisfaction doing it.
Colossill: Your ethnicity?
Naomi Banks: I am of Jamaican and Syrian-Lebanese descent.
Colossill: What are your career goals, hobbies, and zodiac sign?
Naomi Banks: As a model, I would like to go further than only commercial. I am always open to new projects, to change hairstyles, to go out of my comfort zone and new challenges. I love reading and playing piano. My zodiac sign is virgo.
Colossill: What is something that inspires you?
Naomi Banks: Tell me I can’t be or have something…
Colossill: Who are some of your favorite models and designers, and why?
Naomi Banks: Supermodels in the 90’s are my favorites. Stacey Mckenzie is my all time favorite model because of her unique look and fierce attitude. She was a goal achiever in the modeling industry. I also love Yasmeen Ghauri, Beverly Peele, Naomi Campbell and Tyra Banks. Whenever they make/made an appearance on a runway, they own/owned the stage. All of these supermodels “created a brand” with themselves.
My favorite designer is Tom Ford. He has his own signature and everything is so original. I love the way he plays with geometrics. I always admire Rossella Jardini (for Moschino) because Moschino, in general, is so innovative, modern and different from all the other brands.
Colossill: Which fashion magazines, websites, blogs, and catalogs do you visit most often?
Naomi Banks: www.schonmagazine.com http://dresstokillmagazine.com
It’s not fashion, but I read it everyday http://www.forbes.com/
Colossill: How would you describe your style?
Naomi Banks: I am far from being a fashion victim. I am a full time student, so during the week I wear comfortable clothes such as: jeans, a t-shirt and boots, but during the weekend… I am always over dressed. My motto is: ‘’Never over-dressed.’’ As it is always the case. I love wearing dresses and high heels no matter the dress code and my plans. I am usually dressed in all black outfits or neutral colors.
Colossill: Do you have any other experience in the fashion industry (writing, photography, marketing, etc.)?
Naomi Banks: I have experience in pageants and marketing.
Colossill: How do you prepare for a modeling shoot?
Naomi Banks: Out of curiousity, I like to know more about the photographer. When I just started, I had to practice my poses for hours. Now it just comes naturally when I am on set. I just make sure I am all put together.
Colossill: What is fun and rewarding about modeling?
Naomi Banks: As much as the industry of modeling is seen as hard and bad for girls’ self-esteem. The industry sees beauty in different angles and I love how they can make your flaws your strengths. To meet a variety of people with different talents and interests on a regular basis is very impressive.
Colossill: What advice do you have for other aspiring models?
Naomi Banks: Be ready to be discouraged by people, to be laughed at and to be rejected more times than signed. Take it as a life experience and never give up on your dream. Be fierce, perseverant and you will succeed. (After the rain, there is always sunshine)
