Danièle Watts is an African-American actress who played CoCo in Quentin Tarantino’s hit movie Django Unchained. She is not a prostitute and never has been But that’s not what the Studio City, Los Angeles police thought when they saw her kissing a white man.
After kissing her husband, Brian James Lucas, Watts says she “handcuffed and detained” by Studio City Police officers in Los Angeles last Thursday.
Lucas said that the two police officers said they thought the couple was actually a white man soliciting an African American woman for prostitution. In reality, it was a married couple simply showing affection to one another in public. Apparently the Studio City cops found this “suspicious”.
Watts is currently acting in Martin Lawrence show Partners. She posted an account of what happened on her Facebook page:
“As I was sitting in the back of the police car, I remembered the countless times my father came home frustrated or humiliated by the cops when he had done nothing wrong,” Watts recounted.
“I felt his shame, his anger, and my own feelings of frustration for existing in a world where I have allowed myself to believe that “authority figures” could control my BEING… my ability to BE!!!!!!!”
On Lucas’ separate Facebook post on his own account, Watts Caucasian husband said that “from the questions that [police] asked me as D was already on her phone with her dad, I could tell that whoever called on us (including the officers), saw a tatted RAWKer white boy and a hot bootie shorted black girl and thought we were a HO (prostitute) & a TRICK (client).”
